Kurt Schwitters

I chose these images from a book on the artists work. Schwitters was a leading artists in collage work during world war 1. He used collage as a way of getting across poltical messages. I think this is a really useful way of knowing what the mood was like during the time of the war and how it was for people to live with the conflict. The use of newpaper clippings and found images really gets the message across and the time for the piece is identifiable from this too.
I thought it would be useful to look at artists who have used collage throughout the decades to show the mood of the country and world at that specific time.

Researching more of Mutu's work I found that a lot of it is grotesque and she touches on some very political views which I think is good, however some of it just seems a bit too vulgar.

Ideas for case studies

For the case studies i am thinking of choosing a collage from an early period and comparing this to a modern collage. Or possibly comparing one i like with one i don't like from any time period. I am going to look for a few more examples that may be more relevant for this subject choice.

I like the fact this collage is so intricate and small. The colours look good and this collage looks so delicate compared to Reed's work. They both give different perceptions of the characters because of the way they have been collaged. This character looks small and quiet compared to Reed's tough upfront character with the use of sharp edged bold cut couts.

Kyle Reed
I like the way the characters in Reed's work are sharp and strong looking, by using thick straight edged cut outs. It reminds me of some work from the art deco era and gives it quite an old look about it.

Wangechi Mutu
I have chosen this collage as I think it is the strongets image I have found. This artist focus' on portraiting african woman. All of his work is very strong and bold and some I came across isn't pleasent to look at. Although I appreciate his work it is not to my taste as I think some of it is a bit too graphic and harsh.

I thought the simple black and white illustration and splash of colour with collage was really effective here. I like the way the artist creates a trail of colour with collage from the camera lens.

Laurent Blanchier
I was interested in this artist because he specialises in celebrity caricature. The collages are great and really recogniseable. The caricatures don't look cheesey as most do and the collage gives a different quality to the work.

Jonathan Burton
I like theis collage because it was humarous and some of the subjects Burton collaged were similar to Hotermann's in the sense of having an eerie quality.

Sara Fanelli
I love the colour and naivity of this artists work. The images are playful and fun, I think this is why Fanelli is so sucessful as a childrens artist.

I thought this work was really nice, I found it hard to choose an example to show. Collage is only part of this artists work, she does illustrations and typefaces all which have been really sucessful. What I like most about the collages is that she doesn't just use different bits of paper, the artist uses thread and paper clips which give a different quality to her work.

I really liked a particular project by this artist. She has been uploading onto her blog each day for a while now, a collage a day. Her work is really personnal and she talks about her life too which obviously relates to her work. The work is very bright and simple. My favourite pieces are the typographic ones although there are only a few of these.

Carl Fredrik Hotermann
Minimalist collage that looks like graphic illustrations. As well as the simple cutouts it's what the artist collages that interests me most. All the work has an eerie quality to it I think.

Preliminary Research-COLLAGE

I have decided to research collages as I like to make them myself and I like the unique quality artists can get each time they create one. Collages also appeal to me because there are no restrictions, you can use all mediums together. I think anyone can create a collage and I find it easier to expresss myself in this way as opposed to drawing.
